May 31, 2026:  Love: Jonathan

Text: 1 Samuel 18:1-4

Jonathan lived at a crucial time in the history of Israel. God had removed His hand from his father, Saul and David was to be the new king. Jonathan seemed to be in favor of this God-ordained direction. He demonstrated his love for David through gift-giving and loyalty. His example of love inspires us to consider how we might express our love to our friends and those around us.

Example of Jesus: John 11:32-36 - Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus. The people noted the how much Jesus loved Lazarus. Jesus demonstrated His love by sharing in the grief of His friends.

 Text: Nehemiah 8:1-12

Nehemiah led the Children of Israel in a time of dedication as the wall around Jerusalem was completed. As Ezra was reading the Book of the Law to the people, they were convicted and began to weep. He challenged them to pause and rejoice! God was bringing refreshment to their souls! The joy of the Lord is indeed our strength!

Example of Jesus: John 15:11 – Jesus was a joy-filled person. He expressed His desire that the disciples be filled with that same joy!

Abigail demonstrated a peaceful spirit when she chose to intervene in an impending violent between David’s men and her husband’s men. She was a true peacemaker. Often, peacemakers are able to be successful because they are at peace themselves!

Example of Jesus: Mark 4:35-41 – Jesus was asleep in the boat during the storm! He also challenged the disciples to “not be afraid” in John’s account of Him walking on water. He also promised that He would give us His peace (John 16:33).
